Biography

Kasia J. Lipska, MD, MHS, is a diabetes expert who encourages her patients to take an active role in managing diabetes so they can live their lives as normally as possible. “We've come a long way to make the treatment of diabetes more effective, safer and easier to incorporate into everyday life,” she says. “I want the management of diabetes to be thoughtful, safe and kind.”

An assistant professor of medicine (endocrinology) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Lipska is also investigating ways to better manage type 2 diabetes, especially for older patients with multiple chronic ailments. Her primary research is on prevention of severe hypoglycemia, and on better understanding the pros and cons of glucose-lowering therapy in older adults.

An outspoken advocate for people with diabetes, Dr. Lipska published an opinion article in The New York Times in 2016 accusing drug companies and middle men of artificially inflating the price of insulin, which people with diabetes depend on to lower their blood sugar and keep them healthy. She also successfully petitioned federal regulators to allow expanded use of the drug metformin to treat type 2 diabetes.
